- Could you let us know the reasons why you chose to use EnglishCentral?

“Vocabulary is an essential part of the language learning process. English Central provides a service which many other vocabulary learning programs do not: learning words in context. Not only does it provide students with useful tools to self-study English through listening, reading, speaking, and writing- but it provides teachers with a way to measure students' progress in a meaningful way. Being able to choose which words students focus on in the Vocabulary Builder is a great tool for any kind of language learning program around the world.”

- How do you use EnglishCentral within your curriculum?

“​At APU, students use EC in two main ways: first, they have a weekly requirement to complete the videos, study vocabulary, and speak the lines. These activities are of the students own choosing. Also, we use English Central to support the textbook topics in our classes. If students are studying English through a topic such as "Environment", teachers can easily search for videos which may relate to the key lesson, to activate students' prior knowledge of the content.”
“​Secondly, we use EC to achieve vocabulary objectives set by our curriculum. We understand the importance of learning vocabulary, but often high schools in Japan will have students learn very infrequent words for various examinations. Therefore, we have selected the "NGSL" as one of the most important sets of vocabulary which students must master in all forms- of course listening and reading (receptive knowledge), but also we aim for mastery of productive speaking and writing forms (productive knowledge). Therefore, students have weekly or biweekly quizzes through EC's Vocabulary Builder.”
“​A third method we are experimenting with is focusing on the speak the lines feature. We are currently interested to explore this feature and how it can improve students' pronunciation- often an overlooked component of language learning programs.”


- Why and how would you recommend EnglishCentral to other teachers if they are considering to use it?

“​I highly recommend English Central. I am personally jealous of all the new technology and great systems students have nowadays at their disposal. The best part about EC is its engaging process to learn vocabulary through several different systems. Teachers can view all these different activities easily through the administrative tools. It will certainly fit almost any program's needs. Honestly, I wish it was available when I was learning languages.”
