- Could you let us know the reasons why you chose to use EnglishCentral?

“I have been using EnglishCentral since 2016 and was initially attracted to it for the autonomy it provides students with. I decided to use it with a class that was aiming to prepare students for study abroad. Students who have returned from trips abroad often tell me that one of the hardest adjustments they found when going abroad for study purposes was the initial week or so of their stay. They often cited the speed at which locals spoke at as being overwhelming.
To counter this, I wanted students to have plenty of exposure to English spoken at native level speed. In this regard, EnglishCentral was an obvious choice as it offered students opportunities to watch as many videos as they liked and at their convenience. Being able to do this outside class time, often during school commutes made it appealing to students. The fact that the teachers are then able to monitor what students have studied makes it an even more attractive choice. ”

- How do you use EnglishCentral within your curriculum?

“Although EnglishCentral advised me that their service should be used as a self-study tool, I have integrated it into my lessons. EnglishCentral created a course for my class with a certain number of units containing videos to watch, study and speak every week. I allowed students to do part of that in class and monitored their progress. Often times this content was related to areas that I had created original learning materials on, such as describing processes, or introducing parts of Japanese culture to foreigners. The videos sometimes acted as a schema building exercise and helped give the learning materials some context for students. "

- How does your students like EnglishCentral?

“I found EnglishCentral to be especially useful in classes where motivation was often a problem. Students had studied English at high school and were turned off by seeing the same textbooks and materials appear again at university. In that sense, EnglishCentral provided a breath of fresh air. ”

- Why and how would you recommend EnglishCentral to other teachers if they are considering to use it?

“My advice to teachers who might be considering EnglishCentral for their students is to try it out with one of their classes first in order to get used to the site and how it works. Teachers should take advantage of the support that English Central provide. Another aspect of the service that I liked about EnglishCentral was that they communicated directly with university bookshops for ordering subscriptions. This is especially useful for teachers who may lack the Japanese language skills required to deal with university bookshops.”
